The 2021-2022 academic year at the Nazarbayev Intellectual School of Physics and Mathematics in Astana ended up with a dombra lesson, in which 984 students took part. The lesson was conducted by a teacher of supplementary education, Professor Aitzhan Toktagan who is the Honored Worker of Culture in the Republic of Kazakhstan. He told the students about the history of creation and perform the famous kyui “Saryarka”, “Balbyrauyn”, “Yerkem-ai”, “Kenes”, and “Zhastar bii”.
The application to Guinness World Records (GWR) was submitted in December 2021. According to the Guinness Book of Records requirements, 20 stewards and 2 witnesses observed the large-scale lesson. For every 50 participated students there was to be one independent steward who would oversee a particular group, marking for disqualification anyone who would leave the record area or do not perform the required action. The Witnesses acted as GWR’s trustees and thus observed the record’s creation.
The dombra lesson has become the only case in the world when a vast majority of 984 students from one school played the main national instrument of Kazakhstan. The Kazakh attempt will hopefully be included in the global directory of outstanding achievements and unique phenomena.
The `LARGEST DOMBRA LESSON` attempt has been highlighted in the news by the national media “Yegemen Kazakhstan” and “Kazakhstanskaya Pravda.”
