The educational program of AEO “Nazarbayev Intellectual Schools” – NIS-Program – is a normative conceptual framework document that outlines the general approaches and educational content of the Intellectual Schools. It is primarily focused on the natural-mathematical direction of education and establishes basic principles, rules, and conditions for organizing a result-oriented educational process.

Criteria-based assessment is a method that involves comparing students’ educational achievements with clearly defined, collectively developed criteria that are known to all participants in the educational process in advance. These criteria align with the goals and content of education, and aim to develop students’ educational and cognitive competence.

The Second Foreign Language

Nazarbayev Intellectual School of Physics and Mathematics in Astana introduced the study of a second foreign language taking into account the preferences of students, feedback from parents, and the school’s capabilities. For the 2022-2023 academic year, students in grades 7-12 have the option to study German, French, Chinese, Korean, and Japanese. Learning a second foreign language provides additional opportunities for students to pursue their studies at top universities around the world. To effectively organize the teaching process for a second foreign language, the school has established partnerships with the official representative offices of the countries whose languages are being studied. These partnerships aim to develop curricula, provide educational and methodological materials, and improve the qualifications of teachers. Partnerships include ZfA Kasachstan (Germany), the Goethe Institute and Confucius Institute at L.N. Gumilyov University (China), the Education Center at the Embassy of the Republic of Korea (South Korea), and the Embassy of Japan in the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Kazakh-Japanese Center for Human Resources Development (Japan).

School calendar

for 2022-2023 academic year

The primary goal of the educational program at the Nazarbayev Intellectual School is to instill in students an understanding and appreciation of moral, universal, and national values such as honor, dignity, decency, and respect. The program aims to promote a sense of responsibility among students towards their actions and decisions.

The cultivation of moral character is an important aspect of education, which is achieved by leveraging the educational potential of the Integrated Educational Program and academic subjects. The program emphasizes a holistic approach to learning, creating an environment that is supportive, friendly, and conducive to education.

For the creative, physical, and intellectual development of students, we offer extracurricular activities and classes of interest, such as sports, art, intellectual, and technical activities. Moreover, we provide various elective courses in Kazakhstan and abroad in collaboration with the best educational and research organizations specializing in natural and mathematical disciplines.

Successful educational work relies on the participation of all employees at the Intellectual School in the educational process and on the cooperation between the school and parents.

Of particular importance in the implementation of the educational work of the Intellectual Schools are social projects and practices:

“100 books recommended for reading by students of the Intellectual Schools”, Local History Research Expedition “Tugan elge tagzym”; Social practice “Eki apta auylda”, Practice “10 days at the parent’s enterprise”, “History of 100 Kazakh kuis”, “TEDx”, “Wikipedia”, “Service to the community”, “Kazakh Anderi”, “Leadership lessons”, etc.

The mixed-age community called “Shanyrak” unites two classes (12th and 9th grade, 11th and 8th grade, 10th and 7th grade). Each Shanyrak community has its own distinctive features – emblem, motto, color – and is coordinated by a curator. The “Shanyrak” community in the Nazarbayev Intellectual Schools fosters a sense of unity and teamwork among students.

In Kazakh culture, “Shanyrak” has a great symbolic meaning as a symbol of the house and unity. Once a month, the Shanyrak community gathers for a large meeting to discuss current issues, make decisions, plan and prepare collective creative activities, and social projects.

Throughout the year, various intellectual, creative, and sports competitions are held between the communities, and at the end of the year, the results are tallied. The Shanyrak community that scores the most points is rewarded with an expedition to the most beautiful places in Kazakhstan called “Tugan elge tagzym.”

The involvement of all students in the Shanyrak community contributes to their creative, physical, and intellectual development.
